10 Things observed while watching HGTV.

You watch enough HGTV you start to notice some stuff other than it being a bit odd that you watch HGTV in the first place. BTW this is mostly a comedy piece so don't take shit so seriously :D.

10. HGTV is one of the most tolerant with out being in your face about it networks on tv period. Every color, every family style, every religion is seen on almost a daily basis. One of the things i really give props to HGTV on is showing what real people are like on a day to day basis.

9. People who live in big cities are completly stupid for the most part. As i said on twitter 3 times the prices for a 900 sq ft home where i can get 3000 sq ft. 2100 sq ft less for 3 times the price. Are you people on crack? No wonder america is broke.

8. People in Europe and Asia have no damn idea what a human being looks like. These people build houses that look like they were made for 2 ft tall dolls

7. Every couple that asks for a fixer upper will complain to no end how much work needs to be done in a house they are looking at all the way down to the paint colors.

6. Not all kid spaces need to look like a ride at six flags. Some kids just want a clean organized bedroom that they won't get bored with in a week.

5. If given the chance all women will treat men like dog shit on national tv. Most of these families are supported by the man's income so why is the woman telling him he won't have any closet space and that his tv room will actualy be her sewing room? Dose the guy get any choices at all?

4. Given the opertunity most adults will complain like a 2 year old on a long car ride about every tiny ass detail of a house to the point you just wanna smack um. Be happy your able to buy a house on not living in a grass hut somewhere you ungratful dick.

3. People want everything for nothing. Cherry Cabnets, Granit counters, hardwood floors, etc don't come in $50,000 houses in the bad part of new york. If you get a place that doesn't smell like piss and you don't get shot at coming up be happy.

2. Most designers outside the big ones on shows like Color Splash, Rate my Space, and Myles of Style look like they stole their designs from magazines with no tallent or skill required. Also what works in a designers head like no tv focal point in a living room doesn't work in real life where 99% of americans come home and watch tv. If you have to crane your neck 45 degrees to see the tv the design fails instantly. Stop being a pretensious git and design for real people.

1. HGTV actualy is educational. You can learn a ton about home buying and rennovating from the many shows on the channel. It's also decently entertaining. One of the better channels out there.

So i am sitting here watching the wonderful Geoff Smith doing a concert that was streamed on Ustream.tv on 08.06.08 and it got me thinking about podcasting. You know the old school idea of podcasting made famous by Adam Curry. Ad-Free stick it to the man pirate radio on the internet. It also made me sad that it died pretty quickly. Not in concept but in execution.

First with podshow a curry company, TWiT, and then with Revision3 the idea of advertising in podcasts became the way. Commercial companies even started doing their own podcasts mostly to advertise their products to a new era of media consumer. I personally really hated this trend and bucked it all the time in the forums and chat rooms of places like Hak5. Podcasting was never meant to be a way to make a living. It was a way to spread your message no matter what that message was. It was a way to be seen if you had talent like Geoff Smith who i mentioned before. It was in the most part a way to stick a giant boot up the ass of commercial radio which had become 99% ads and BS....like podcasting is now.

With my new show i hope to totally buck this trend and go back to the old ways of podcasting. Ad-free, anything goes, brain dumping audio. I hope others follow and stop being lured by the almighty dollar and come back to podcastings roots of raw, people first, fuck athority radio programing. We may be broke but we are rich in voice and we shall be free.

Funny i posted that pre World of Warcraft, pre house buying, pre twit wiki, and pre a lot of things. Now i return to vox in the wake of pownce's creative team coming aboard and moving my commentless blog over to these comforting waters. Vox is like the girl friend who treats you like poo but you just keep coming back cause in the end you love her. Well honey your man is back :D.

Fun with Mac Tweaking (Front Row Hack)

As you may or may not know i consider myself a bit of a Apple Front Row hacker. I love making this lovely piece of software from apple do things it's not suppose to do. An early example that was featured partly in a episode of Hak5 and also available via the wiki is voice activated front row and getting it on older G4 based systems. My new little trick comes from MacOSXHints and that is how to add a bunch of external drives with video on them and have them show up in Front Row.

What i am using:
- Tiger 10.4.11
- WD MyBook USB Hard Drives
- Random 4 port USB Hub

Step 1: Go into finder and hit the key combo Shift-Command-G (Go To Folder Command) and type in /Volumes.

Step 2: While holding down Command-Option drag the Volumes folder into the movies folder. This essentially makes a short cut to the folder which holds all your external and internal devices like drives, CD-Roms, Thumb Drives, etc.

Step 3: Chain up your USB devices into the Hub in my case about 1TB worth of drives holding anal retentively foldered video files collected over the past few years all in high quality iPod format. (I am a sick man)

Step 4: Open Front Row and go to Videos/Movies/Volumes and you will see your newly added external drives all mounted and ready to play with.

Real World Uses:

DVD server using handbreak to rip movies onto external drives in high quality quicktime/mp4 format.
Media Center addition for large stores of video content.
You get the point.

This method along side a MacMini is the basis of Alice Mach 2 my media center setup years in the making. More on Alice and a textfile of this document for sharing with friends will be available via www.sxe13.com/RL soon.
